Artist Liam O’Neill created an unusual installation, a life-size racehorse sculpture with a hidden whiskey bar in its belly, to raise funds for Irish Injured Jockeys. O’Neill’s mare, painted in blacks, browns, and ochre, has a concealed whiskey cabinet under the saddle-cloth, reflecting his creativity and local craftsmanship. The sculpture will be auctioned at the Irish Derby, with proceeds supporting jockeys injured in the line of duty and Sensational Kids, a charity providing affordable therapy for children.
O’Neill, who spent over 100 hours on the piece, drew inspiration from the horses of his youth in west Kerry, where he often depicts horses in his artwork. His installation features contributions from local artisans, showcasing the collaborative spirit of his community. The auction aims to assist jockeys who have suffered life-altering injuries, recognizing them as heroes facing ongoing challenges.
